Story of a Dancer – Arundhati Srinivasan
Photographed by Vikram Bawa
In this intimate visual series, acclaimed photographer Vikram Bawa captures the deeply personal journey of Arundhati Srinivasan, a celebrated Indian classical dancer, within the very walls where her art was born.
Set in the home she grew up in, these images are not just portraits—they are echoes of discipline, memory, and silent devotion. The worn floors that have felt the rhythm of her feet, the warm light cascading across ancestral objects, and the solitude of the space all speak to a lifetime of dedication to her craft. Today, Arundhati performs Bharatanatyam on global stages, but it is here—in her sanctuary—that the soul of her art truly lives.
For Vikram Bawa, this series is a return to the essence of storytelling through photography. Known for his work that spans fashion, advertising, and fine art, Bawa turns his lens inward to observe not just a person, but a life unfolding—unfiltered, nostalgic, and profoundly human. This project is a reflection of his lifelong journey to capture people not just as subjects, but as stories.
“Story of a Dancer” is a timeless ode to heritage, passion, and the quiet places where greatness begins.

On creating "Story of a Dancer"
“I’ve spent much of my life photographing the extraordinary—fashion, celebrities, commercial art—but sometimes, it’s the quiet stories that leave the deepest imprint. With Arundhati, I wasn’t capturing a performance. I was witnessing where her journey began. The silence of her home, the morning light on old walls, the floor that remembers her every move—it all spoke louder than any stage ever could."
This series is my way of listening to that silence and honouring the sacred rhythm of a life built on discipline, emotion, and love for one’s art.”
